Dr. Mark P. Thomas

Dr. Mark P. Thomas is a Grammy-nominated music director and educator who has performed in 22 countries around the world. He has been recognized in both the United States and Europe for his passion, creativity, dedication, and leadership in the performing arts. At home, Dr. Thomas has served as the music director and conductor of the Schuylkill Choral Society since 1986. The Pottsville Republican has recognized Thomas as "...a person who has made a difference to our county...he continues year after year to push the Schuylkill Choral Society to greater heights". Along with his duties for the Choral Society, Dr. Thomas is co-founder of the Anthracite Philharmonic where he serves as Artistic Director and Conductor. Along with his wife Eileen, he has also founded and serves as music conductor of Schuylkill County’s first nationally registered children’s chorus, the Minor Notes Chorale.

Thomas has guest conducted and prepared choruses for many organizations including the Prague Radio Symphony, the New York Pops, and the State Orchestra of St. Petersburg. He has made multiple tours throughout Europe and North America including performances at Notre Dame in Paris, St. Stephen’s in Vienna, the State Opera House, and the Cathedral of Saints Mary and Paul in Prague, St. Peter’s in Vatican City, Rome, Carnegie Hall, the Lincoln Center, and the Riverside Cathedral in New York City, and Orchestra Hall in Chicago. Thomas has also served as a guest conductor with the Ocean Grove Choral Festival Choir, at Reading's Music-fest, and for PMEA choral festivals throughout Pennsylvania. Dr. Thomas has appeared nationally on NPR and PBS as well as local appearances on Comcast Tonight and Comcast Newsmakers. He has served as a music consultant for Maryland Educational Television, has composed music for television and film and has served as an adjunct professor of music at Alvernia University, Penn State University, and Bucks County Community College. Thomas and his choirs are also featured performers of the National Anthem for the Philadelphia Sports Community, including regular performances for the Phillies, Sixers, and Flyers.

Dr. Thomas is listed in Who's Who in the World, Who's Who in America, and Who's Who in Education. He has received recognition from former President William Clinton on behalf of a music program he designed honoring our World War II veterans. He has been recognized twice on the floor of the United States House of Representatives for serving as an ambassador of music for the United States. Thomas has also been awarded multiple citations of excellence and service to his community by the Pennsylvania House of Representatives, the Pennsylvania Senate, and the Schuylkill County Board of Commissioners. Both the Austrian and German governments have also recognized Thomas for his contributions in music. Thomas was named by Philadelphia Magazine as the "Best Choral Director" in the Philadelphia region. He has also been recognized by the St. David's Society as a "Citizen of the Year" recipient, Pennsylvania finalist for "Teacher of the Year", and was the first musician inducted into the Upper Perkiomen Valley Hall of Fame.
